BVHS TYDLYN 1870 tot nou.

  • Dit is 1870 en daar word skoolgehou in die NG Kerksaal. Die aantekening in die skool se dagboek lees “met een grasdak en zonder zolder”. Veertien jaar later word die hoeksteen van die Meisieseminarie gelê.
  • In 1899 breek die oorlog uit tussen Brittanje en die Boererepublieke. Teen die einde van die oorlog, in 1902, word hierdie skool gestig as Bethlehem High School/Bethlehem Middelbare Skool. Die eerste skoolhoof was dr. George Clark.
  • In 1916 word die eerste aantekening van die skool se leuse gemaak : “NON SIBI SED PATRIAE
  • In 1928 word die eerste foto van ons huidige kleurbaadjie geneem
  • In 1932 word ons tweede skoolhoof, mnr. I.W. Malan, ‘n baie beminde Latynonderwyser, aangestel.
  • Ons huidige rugbytrui word in 1935 in gebruik geneem vir al die rugbyspanne,
  • In 1938 kry die skool ook sy huidige naam: BETHLEHEM VOORTREKKER HOëRSKOOL.
  • In 1945 kry BVHS sy derde skoolhoof, dr. T.J Heyns
  • In 1950 word Dudley Meyer BVHS se eerste Springbok in atletiek.
  • Die daaropvolgende jaar, 1951, word mnr. M.A. Ferreira, oftewel Oom Tip, ons vierde skoolhoof.
  • 1952 IS DIE JAAR VAN GEBEURTENISSE. Die hoeksteen vir die “nuwe skool” word gelê. Die  skoolkreet word vir die eerste keer geskree. Mnr. W.J. Coetzee, ons vyfde skoolhoof, word aangestel EN DIRKIE WORD GEBORE. Ons skoollied, wat deur I.L. de Villiers geskryf is, word ook in 1952 vir die eerste keer gesing. Dit word vandag nog in ons skoolsaal gesing en die klanke van baie dekades se leerlinge kan fluisterend op die skoolgange gehoor word.
  • In 1955 word die “nuwe skool” betrek, waar die huidige Truida Kestell-skool vandag is. Tom van Vollenhoven word ons eerste rugby Springbok.
  • In 1959 vind die eerste “Social” plaas by BVHS. Dit neem die vorm van ‘n speletjiesaand aan.
  • Dit is 1967. Ons sewende skoolhoof, mnr. J.H.S. de Jager word aangestel en John van Reenen word ‘n Springbok-atleet. Die jaar daarna, 1968, sit die graad 8’s sit vir die eerste keer op die vloer.
  • In 1969 word die agste skoolhoof, mnr. G.J. van der Merwe aangestel en die negende, mnr. F.W. Kock in 1975. Kort daarna, 1979, trek ons in hierdie nuwe en huidige pragtige skoolgeboue en koshuis in.
  • Die eersterugbyspan trek in 1980 vir die eerste keer die swart trui oor hul kop en ons tiende skoolhoof, mnr. J.S. Strydom, word aangestel.
  • Ons elfde skoolhoof, mnr. H.C. Burger word in 1994 aangestel.
  • In 2002 vier ons die 100ste bestaansjaar.
  • Ons huidige skoolhoof, mnr. G.H. Coetzee, word in 2012 saam met die 110jaar-feesvieringe aangestel as die twaalfde skoolhoof.
  • In 2017 herdenk ons die 115de jaar, wat saamval met ons jaarlikse wildsfees. Dit is nou ‘n instelling om die skool se verjaarsdag jaarliks op 1 September te herdenk.

  • BVHS TIME LINE 1870 TO THE PRESENT

    • It is 1870. Teaching and learning takes place in the Dutch Reformed church hall. In the school diary it is noted that the building has a thatched roof with no attic or ceiling. Fourteen years later the cornerstone of the first building Meisieseminarie (girls seminary) is laid.
    • 1899 sees the start of the war between Great Britain and the Boer Republics. Towards the end of the war, in 1902, this school is founded as Bethlehem High School/Bethlehem Middelbare skool. The first principal was Dr George Clarke.
    • In 1916 the first note of the school motto is made: NON SIBI SED PATRIAE
    • In 1928 our present blazer is photographed for the first time.
    • In 1932 a much loved Latin teacher, Mr I.W. Malan, is appointed as second principal.
    • Our present rugby jersey is inaugurated for all teams in 1935.
    • In 1938 the school is renamed BETHLEHEM VOORTREKKER HOëRSKOOL/HIGH SCHOOL
    • In 1945 the third principal, Dr T.J. Heyns, is appointed at BVHS.
    • In 1950 Dudley Meyer becomes the first BVHS Springbok in athletics.
    • The next year, 1951, sees the appointment of Mr M.A. Ferreira, better known as Oom Tip, as fourth principal.
    • 1952 IS A MEMORABLE YEAR. The cornerstone of the “new school” is laid. The war cry reverberates for the first time. Mr W.J. Coetzee, our fifth principal, is appointed AND DIRKIE IS BORN. Our school anthem, written by I.L. de Villiers, is sung for the first time in 1952, too. To this day we sing it in our school hall, and the sound of it is whispered in the passages by decades of learners.
    • In 1955 we move into the “new school”, where Truida Kestell School is today. Tom van Vollenhoven becomes our first rugby Springbok.
    • 1959 sees the first “Social” at BVHS in the form of an evening of games.
    • It is 1967. Our seventh principal, Mr J.H.S. de Jager takes office and John van Reenen becomes a Springbok athlete. In the following year, 1968, the Grade 8s sit on the floor for the first time.
    • In 1969 our eighth principal, Mr G.J. van der Merwe is appointed, followed by the ninth, Mr F.W. Kock, in 1975. Soon afterwards, in 1979, we move into the present, beautiful school and hostel buildings.
    • In 1980 the first rugby team wear the now so well-known black jersey for the first time, and we welcome our tenth principal, Mr J.S. Strydom.
    • He is followed by our eleventh principal, Mr H.C. Burger, in 1994.
    • In 2002 we celebrate our centenary.
    • Our present principal, the twelfth, Mr G.H. Coetzee is appointed in 2012, the year we celebrate one hundred and ten years.
    • 2017 sees our 115th year, celebrated at our annual Wildsfees. It has now become tradition to celebrate the school birthday on 1 September.
